A Historic Site, A Healthier Future.
176 Wellington Street
The Old Hospital Site at 176 Wellington Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake stands as a testament to the community’s enduring commitment to healthcare and collective well-being. In the aftermath of the First World War and the 1918-1919 Spanish flu pandemic, local residents recognized the pressing need for a dedicated medical facility. Through concerted fundraising efforts, the town acquired Dr. Hedley Anderson’s residence, transforming it into the six-bed Cottage Hospital, which opened its doors in 1920. The inaugural night marked a hopeful beginning with the birth of the hospital’s first baby. This initiative also saw the formation of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Auxiliary, a group of dedicated women who tirelessly supported the hospital’s operations.

As the community grew, so did the demand for more advanced medical services. This led to the construction of a new 27-bed hospital on Wellington Street, officially opened on May 16, 1951. The facility boasted modern amenities, including an operating wing, obstetrical services, and dedicated spaces for patient care. Adjacent to it, a 16-bed nurses’ residence was inaugurated in 1954, underscoring the town’s dedication to comprehensive healthcare. By 1968, a chronic care wing was added, further enhancing the hospital’s capabilities.
However, the mid-1990s brought significant changes. Provincial efforts to streamline healthcare services led to the hospital’s closure in April 2016. Recognizing the site’s intrinsic value, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake acquired the property from the Niagara Health System in 2018.
